The agency determines the companies cannot be trusted to safeguard U.S. technologies.
The U.S. Department of Commerce recently added six companies to the U.S. trade restriction list, four of which have confirmed links to Chinese military operations. The Bureau of Industry and Security’s Export Enforcement Assistant Secretary Matthew Axelrod stated these new designations were necessary to prevent “American know-how from training [People’s Republic of China] military pilots and U.S. technology from aiding Russia enhances U.S. national security.”
The Commerce Department manages the Entity List to prevent U.S. companies from trading with known nefarious influences. The department also manages an Unverified List, which requires U.S. companies to obtain additional licenses to trade with potentially shady foreign companies. The Commerce Department also added thirteen foreign companies to this list after department officials were not allowed to complete on-site visits at the companies’ facilities.
